The Student Spotlight is very grateful to Ms. Eastick’s and Mr. Chan’s hard work in leading the magazine for the last two years, and we thank them for their dedication to independent journalism and to empowering the young people of the NT. With their stepping down, Ms. Grimes and I were chosen as the new Chair and Editor-in-Chief respectively. As we begin the new year with fresh leadership and fresh perspectives, we cannot be more excited to be bringing you a year full of more amazing stories of young people.
Thank you to the readers, for hanging on with the reshuffling of the organisation and the new design, because we are nothing without you. We thank all of our amazing journalists, editors, graphic designers, and everyone for contributing to such a wonderful cause. But most of all, we welcome all the new readers and new recruits to the Student Spotlight, and we hope you stay and support us for the coming years.
In this issue, we have highlighted some of the amazing achievements of young people in the NT. From Jayden Wong, who fought his way into the NT Top 20 at the same time as fighting cancer, to Amelia Wurst, speaking about her experiences and struggles at the Youth Round Table on the dire situation of mental health in the NT, the Student Society’s aim is to inspire young people. We want to make them believe in the value of the NT and to see that they can and do have an impact on the community around us.
Alongside these achievements, we have an interview with the CEO of NAAJA, Ben Grimes, who speaks on his view of justice in the Northern Territory and his views on the current government’s actions around it. These stories are only a glimpse into what’s coming in the future of the NT Student Society, and we cannot wait to show you.
But please keep holding on for us with the change of leadership as we are only starting to get the hang of it. We certainly hope you enjoy our very first issue with Indiana and I as the directors, and that you feel inspired. Sincerely, the future of the Northern Territory cannot be in more safe hands with these young people, and we hope you believe in them as much as we do.
