Welcome to Issue 16 of the Student Spotlight Magazine! This issue marks my second issue as the Chair, and my first time writing the foreword. Over the past few months, it has been really rewarding to see the magazine continue to grow, with new recruits still coming in.
Having been a journalist for the Student Spotlight before taking on the role of Chair, I remember how exciting it felt to write my first story, see it published and know that other students were reading it. It’s incredibly rewarding to meet all the new journalists, photographers and designers join our team, bringing with them new ideas and perspectives.
At its core, the Student Spotlight has always been about highlighting young people across the Northern Territory and the things that matter to them. Issue 16 reflects this in a number of ways. In this issue, we spotlight the founders of Amplify the Youth, a group of young musicians who turned their passion into a music program for other young people. We also follow Darwin students who travelled all the way to New York City with a once in a lifetime opportunity to take on the roles of delegates and participate in a model UN. Simply, it’s clear that young Territorians are doing it all.
We are also committed to covering politics – at all levels – as something extremely relevant to young people and our futures. In this issue you’ll find a Q&A newly elected Member for Nightcliff, Ed Smelt, as well as opinion pieces on the appointment of David Conolly as Administrator.
I would also like to extend a huge thank you to all of the magazine’s new contributors who have joined the magazine this year. It’s been great to see so many students getting involved and contributing their valuable ideas, time and effort. It’s what allows the magazine to keep growing and keep shining a spotlight on the Northern Territory’s youth.
Last but definitely not least, I would like to thank the readers of student spotlight. Everything we work towards and do is fuelled by the voices of young people – the readers of the magazine.
I hope you enjoy this issue and find inspiration within it.
